I follow this blog called Nutritionista. She recently posted about food trends that she thinks will be big for 2011, in which she noted “fruit skepticism,” that is, that fruit isn’t really that good for you because you get a “big dose of sugar” from it. Of course you get a big dose of sugar, fruits (and vegetables for that matter) are carbohydrates, and if you paid...

I have this vision of having a room in my house, a library if you will, with tall mahogany bookshelves from floor to ceiling, and ladders on tracks, like you may have seen in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. They’ll be loaded down with the weight of all the world’s best literature and those guilty pleasures by authors like Sandra Brown that you just need sometimes. The room would...

I just burned through Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food, beginning to read it around 4 pm on Dec. 24 and finishing it just before 2 am Dec. 26. The last time I read a book so fast must have been when I read The Kite Runner this past summer. Anyway, I’ve been extremely interested in the food industry since taking Sociology of Food freshman year. I chose the class thinking it...

My grandma is approaching her 70th bday, and the last few years her holiday dinners have come from boxes. I started reading Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food, and I’m on a campaign against processed foods and microwavable meals, which is what I expect to be presented in about half an hour when I get to Grandma’s dinner. It was awkward on Thanksgiving because I barely ate any of...

Success!
I made Saag, sans paneer and sans chicken because my mother had her christmas turkey in the oven. I went a little heavy on the ginger because I wasn’t measuring. Anyway, it tasted great, despite its unappealing green color, which my family will find strange on the dinner table. TOO BAD! They need to expand their taste buds.

The second book the pair discussed is Encyclopedia of the Exquisite, by Jessica Kerwin Jenkins. “This is a much more historical book about all the things that make the world magical and exquisite and complicated in certain ways,” says Singer. It touches upon “everything from the color black, to a Joseph Cornell ballet that was never staged.” And now I’ve got to...
